Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Gutermann and I am a junior Finance major from West Hartford, CT. I am currently ending my first month of studying abroad in the bustling city of Barcelona, Spain.
I’m spending my semester here with the hopes of learning about Spanish culture, taking plenty of risks, and hopefully getting one step closer to becoming fluent. Going into the semester I heard a lot about pickpocketing in Barcelona and, to be honest, it was the only thing I was really nervous about, but after being here for nearly a month I can say that I wasted a lot of time worrying about something I didn’t have to. I’ve dove head on into the culture and really embraced my Spanish speaking with the main goal of getting closer to becoming a fluent speaker, as my reading and writing are already above average. I am also very excited to visit some eccentric places while I’m here, and visit a few places that people wouldn’t normally include on a European vacation.
Growing up near the beach my life, I love to surf and one thing I’m looking forward to is surfing somewhere in Europe, wherever that may be. I chose to study abroad here mainly because of my history of Spanish speaking and Spanish language classes, but also because it is one of the few main European cities that I had yet to visit prior to my arrival. As of right now, I am loving every minute of my time here, have made numerous unforgettable memories in my short three weeks, and am looking forward to many more.
