The countdown has finally come to an end and we’re only one day away from the departure to Sydney, Australia. The reality is finally setting in for me.
I’m currently finishing packing and trying to jam everything into my two suitcases; and man is that tough. If you told me a few weeks ago that I would be bringing two suitcases with me to Australia for an 8-week stay, I would have looked at you like you were crazy. But sure enough, here I am with my two suitcases packed to the brim. Airlines charge a very large fee for any suitcase weighing over 50 pounds though, so I have been putting clothes in and weighing the suitcase and then taking clothes out to make adjustments. It is quite a process. Our first attempt was 53 pounds though…not too far off! Nevertheless, we still had to make plenty of adjustments… just ask my dad, he’ll tell you all about it.
I am very excited to be in an unfamiliar environment, like Australia. I have only been out of America with my family, but never have I been out of the country on my own. While this is a little frightening, I am more excited than nervous about this opportunity to be on my own and truly display my capabilities. Being on my own, I will experience more culture barriers and encounter more difficulties that I must overcome or find a solution to. I am also enthusiastic about food, as most people are, so I cannot wait to experience a different culture of food and see what new tastes I discover. I am also excited to see what new foods or tastes I am not too fond of.
My biggest fear would definitely have to be getting over to Australia and not having the proper paperwork to get into the country. I can see myself trying to explain the lost documents to a grumpy customs officer, who has heard the same story time after time. Fortunately for me, I have an awesome dad that is on top of making sure I have all the necessary documents and information.
Being that I do not have much international experience as an individual, I’m going into this journey with a very open mindset and “go with the flow” attitude. I can’t wait to see what these next 8 weeks have in store for me! Hopefully you’ll join me on this eight-week experience down under!
