MBAs are commonly associated with salary boosts and esteem inflation. You might have heard about the weekly socials and drunk Fridays or watched their well-honed elevator pitches and networking skills. End of first year, MBAs are thrown into big companies as star interns while their second-year fellows walk into big firms and banks with a fat signing bonus. But you might barely know that one out of ten MBAs has depression and suicides took place from Ivy League to little known schools across the world.
It is not because the MBA program makes people depressed but rather those MBA students with perfectionist tendencies are more vulnerable to depressive moods. MBA is not all about glamour and glow, it is also a journey filled with frustration, confusion and epiphany.
Yes. I had depression. And yes, I have walked out of it. An episode that pulled me away from my summer internship, forcing me to rethink about my life and embark on a path what people called a Calling.
According to Amy Wrzesniewski and her fellow authors, “most people see their work as either a Job (focus on financial rewards and necessity rather than pleasure or fulfillment; not a major positive part of life), a Career (focus on advancement), or a Calling (focuson enjoyment of fulfilling, socially useful work).”* For me, MBA is a unique experience that helps reshape my career and re-discover my own Calling.
I am not Wall Street material, but I am a good wardrobe investor. I have an eye for clothing and I dress people well. I own an online boutique and my customers trust me. This summer, I re-opened my e-commerce and used my MBA skills, and sales have grown five folds! While everyone else is doing their internship, I am doing my own business. I used to be so worried about not getting an internship but now I know fashion retail is my true passion and career.
