This year, the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted Smith Women’s Month during March 2017 with activities each week related to women in business. My favorite event of the month was the Sixth Annual Women Leading Women forum honoring financial planner and industry leader Marguerita (Rita) Cheng ’93, founder and CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth, on March 30, 2017.
As I was writing the highlights story, I was forwarded an email from one of the attendees who wrote about how meaningful she found the event. Reading her message made me realize that my takeaways paled in comparison to hers. I then went on to ask others who attended the event to share their takeaways with me and the story really came alive. Here are the seven key takeaways from the event:
- You don’t have to be aggressive to be a good leader
- Let values drive your decisions
- Pioneer change
- Be fearless, be open to the possibilities
- Diversity matters
- Have difficult conversations, help people
- Have passion, purpose and a plan
