Tourist —> Local

About halfway through my time abroad, homesickness crept up on me. Even though I’d read extensively on culture shock and felt convinced that the honeymoon phase would end, I still didn’t notice it happening. And that’s the trickiest thing about it.

Like deadlines. And graduation.

Luckily, I have wonderful friends and family who prompted me to snap out of it!

Pro Tip #1: Organize your support system before shipping out. Know who you’re going to Skype and how often. You’ll begin to look forward to these points of connection.

Getting to know your immediate surroundings more intimately can be a great cure for homesickness. Especially when your immediate surroundings include beautiful, historical buildings in central Lund.

Pro Tip #2: Almost everything is free or discounted for students. Explore these options first, and save your money for once-in-a-lifetime experiences and trips outside the country.

Today’s tourist-to-local transformation location is the Universitetsbibliotek, or University Library (is it just me, or is library the same word in every language except English?)

As my apartment is only one block from the business library, Ekonomicentrum, I never had occasion to visit the main library before. But I’m glad I did. Not only did it send me on a brisk walk through town (another quick pick me up), but it gave me the chance to see this ancient gem.

If you don’t know what this is, ask your parents.

A final thought: Newness is the enemy of boredom.  Get out and explore!
