Virtual Professional Speaker Series
On Friday, May 4th, the OCS offered the third webinar of Virtual Professional Speaker Series in 1520 VMH, students can join in person or virtually. This event invited Chen Zhang as the guest speaker from EY. Chen graduated from Smith School with his Master degree in accounting in 2014 and joined EY after he graduated. He is currently working as a Senior Tax Associate with EY in New York, NY. Chen shared his job search experience and provided career tips for students.
Chen briefly introduced EY and his department. Chen participated Diversity Start Group on July 15th for the first year, his major client is from real estate, Chen mentioned that you can get an inside look at different tax projects in Diversity Start Group. Then, he provided tax advisory services for multinational companies to increase tax compliance. For the past three years, he has focused on international tax, especially for Asia, South America.
Chen also shared the experience to stand out from thousands of candidates. He recommended students to engage events and practice leadership to accumulate amazing SAR stories to talk on an interview day. Also, passing two sections of the CPA exam before graduation is practicable and useful. The summer internship is extremely important to deal with the real challenge, Chen applied for almost 400 positions in New York, Florida, Seattle, DC, etc. to get his first internship.
Then, our host John interviewed him about his job searching experience. As for advice regarding the job search process, Chen talked about info sessions hosted by companies, school hosting events and National career fairs hosted by Ascend, Alpha.
Finally, participants raised several questions. As for Advice for CPA exam, Chen recommended students to start with the easy one and follow the study materials, it’s workable to finish two sections upon graduation. We don’t need to finish all of the sections before graduations to reserve time for engaging networking events.
Thanks for joining us for our last virtual professional speaker series in this semester. The successful event and initiative shown by students have motivated the OCS to organize the upcoming Virtual Professional Speaker Series.
