Don’t Miss Activities in Your First Semester- Yiding

Hello! This is Yiding Xiong, a first-year MS in Information System student. After studying Supply Chain & Operation Management during my undergraduate program in Ohio, I desired to move into business analytics in my future career, and realized that I do need to enhance professional skills in information systems.

The past two months in Smith have been cherished and unforgettable to my life. The most frustrating thing is you could enjoy yourself in hundreds of ways/activities in Smith. Here are things that you should take part in:

1. Big Ten Sports!

The Terrapins joined the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2014, following 62 years in the Atlantic Coast Conference as a founding member. In the fall, UMD students can go to a variety of sports matches including football and soccer. The Terrapins are currently coached by D.J. Durkin. Terrapins have gotten tremendous success after joining the Big Ten for the 2014-2015 Session. Testudo is the official mascot of the university of Maryland. Basically, you could see our mascot in every event on campus. Watching a football game will be a significant memory to all Terps! (P.S. You can get a free ticket in the student section!)

2. Workshops

Excellent academic performance is like a foundation to your future career; however, what makes you competitive is your overall experiences. In Smith School, there are thousands of helpful workshops for student to get exposure to different career paths through special programs and resources to help students gain the experience to be outstanding. I went to the Big Four Workshop. Campus recruiters discussed about tips and suggestion for resumes and interviews. Before attending the workshop, I didn’t think that I could apply for Big Four since their main concentration is accounting; however, the recruiters encouraged students across from all majors to take a try. Students from MS. IS program could apply for the auditing position. Basically, when you are in Smith School, don’t hesitate to get any chance you could have! Join the workshops that you are interested in!

3. Smith Master Student Association

The Smith Master Student Association is a master student organization at Smith, focusing on building connections among students. SMSA organized several off-campus activities for students. Most activities, like Diwali Celebrations, Etiquette Dinner, Climbing Wall Challenge Course, Terp Farm Visit, helps a lot to release students’ stress. Students could learn some useful information at the same time. For example, the Etiquette Dinner will provide students with instruction on the proper etiquette to use when at a business event- everything from which utensil to use and when, and how to conduct yourself at the table.

Once you join in, you will like it!
