Office of Career Services Spotlight: Consulting & Analytics Super Day

Kate Rosa Featured HeadshotThis spring semester the Smith Office of Career Services (OCS) hosted a Consulting and Analytics Super Day at the Part Time MBA campus in Washington, DC.  The day included four individual events including mock interviews, an employer showcase, keynote speaker and a joint networking reception that brought Part Time, Online, Full Time and Executive MBAs together, as well as 28 alumni, employers and faculty.

This year’s keynote speaker was Shiva Verma, Principal at Grant Thornton, who presented on the Art of Analytics.  As the Smith School continues to increase its focus on data driven decision making at an ever greater pace, Shiva’s talk demonstrated the importance of analytics in the  consulting field. He also highlighted the overall trend to improve and expand the science among all industries and company types.

The employer showcases included case interview practice and a general employer discussion about their firm.  Overall the day focused on allowing students to deep dive into the consulting and/or analytics fields offering hands-on practical experiences.  First-year Part Time MBA candidate, Sarah Debel quoted, “The employer showcase was very insightful. I appreciated the opportunity to get a glimpse into the day in the life of a consultant and to understand what may be expected in a job interview.”

While many students attend OCS events to learn more about a particular field of interest, others find that Super Day and other sponsored meetings are great ways to open the door to new professional opportunities.  Paul Lee, a Part Time MBA alum (‘09) and featured employer guest from NetImpact Strategies* stated, “As a small IT and management consulting firm led by Smith Alumni, we are committed to the Smith MBA community.  Participating in the Consulting & Analytics Super Day enabled meaningful discussions with current Full Time and Part Time students, which led to several follow-up meetings to explore career opportunities at our firm.”  Terps helping Terps is a Smith movement that has resulted in numerous hirings across our 60,000 strong student and alumni base- Super Day being one such facilitator for these connections.

This was the sixth Super Day event that the Office of Career Services has hosted over the years.  OCS is committed to providing students with the tools that they need to be successful in the workplace, as well as to facilitate connections between current students, alumni and top employers in the DMV and beyond.

This was a great read! As a MBA candidate interested in Business Analytics and the trending impact on companies this sound like a Super Day that should happen again, with more emphasis on the Analytics (I’m biased lol).
